About Me

Dr. Alison Chu has been a UCLA faculty member since 2013, where she supervises care in the inpatient neonatal ICUs at UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital and UCLA Medical Center Santa Monica. She is board certified in both Pediatrics and Perinatal-Neonatal Medicine.

Dr. Chu earned her bachelor's degree and her medical degree at Northwestern University in Illinois. She completed her pediatric residency and neonatology fellowship at the University of Chicago. During her fellowship, Dr. Chu conducted research in the laboratory of Dr. David Gozal, studying the developmental programming of cardiovascular disease in a mouse model of postnatal hypoxia exposure.

Dr. Chu's research interests are centered around the mechanisms underlying vascular diseases of the neonate. She has received funding from the American Heart Association as well as the NICHD, amongst others, to study placental vascular insufficiency that underlies intrauterine growth restriction. More recently, her interests have extended to understanding the vascular disease seen in retinopathy of prematurity, both by using basic research animal models of oxygen-induced retinopathy as well as by using advanced imaging techniques in human neonates. She has published a number of peer-reviewed research articles, review articles, a book chapter, and a neonatology textbook.
