UCLA Health excellence in precision medicine

Our experts are always looking ahead to the future of medicine. For decades, UCLA Health has pioneered life-changing breakthroughs in preventive care and targeted treatments.

We use our specialized research and expertise to assess a person’s risk for disease. Our specialists also match the right precision medicine treatments with the right patients for highly personalized care. We accomplish this form of personalized medicine by evaluating several factors, including genes, lifestyle, and health history. UCLA Health leads the way in:

Collaborating to advance discoveries: Our precision medicine experts coordinate with departments and institutes across UCLA Health. As a team, we combine our knowledge and expertise. We work together to forge a path into the future of medicine.

Creating customized, precise treatments: As pioneers in precision medicine treatment, we are at the forefront of treatments that are more personalized — and more effective — than ever before. Instead of a one-size-fits-all treatment, our team uses specific information about each patient to develop customized treatments that work for them.

Deepening our understanding of rare diseases: Our research allows us to diagnose disorders that were a mystery just years ago. These discoveries give people with rare diseases new hope. We leverage the resources of UCLA Health to bring clinical trials and effective treatments to people with rare diseases.

Transforming the research landscape: We established the Center for Autism Research in 2006 and the Center for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in 2007. After spearheading the Clinical Genomics Center in 2011, we established the Undiagnosed Disease Network three years later. We aim to transform our patients’ lives through new discoveries and innovative therapies.

Our services

At the UCLA Institute for Precision Health (IPH), we’re committed to discovering the cause of previously undiagnosed diseases so we can develop therapies, provide answers, and offer hope. Through our revolutionary research, our team also makes treatments more effective for diseases that have been around for years, including cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

We’re honored to put groundbreaking technology to work for our patients and their families. We offer:

ATLAS Community Health Initiative: UCLA Health is gathering blood, saliva, and tissue samples from 150,000 people to create California’s largest genomic resource. Our experts gather these samples and analyze the data according to lifestyle, environmental and health information. We use our findings to develop precision medicine treatments for several conditions. Many of these were previously untreatable.

California Center for Rare Diseases at UCLA: Using information from ATLAS and other research, we launched the California Center for Rare Diseases in 2019. We diagnose and treat rare diseases, many of which have never been diagnosed. Our goal is to deepen our understanding of rare diseases and offer families access to clinical trials and innovative treatments. Most importantly, we offer families hope.

Center for SMART Health: We explore new technologies that provide doctors with more accurate information about an individual’s risk for cancer and other diseases. Our experts include a diverse team of engineers, doctors, and computer scientists. We create wearable devices that gather information about each patient. This data helps doctors predict and reduce risk, improve decision making and enhance each patient’s health.

Precision diagnostics and personalized medicine: This program uses genomics to perform specific testing. With genomic testing, our experts isolate the genes for several conditions and diseases such as cancer, brain disease, cardiovascular disease, and depression. Targeted testing translates into more effective treatments.

Conditions we treat

As leaders in research and innovative therapies, our experts have experience predicting, preventing, and using precision medicine treatments for a variety of diseases, disorders and conditions. We use the latest advances in precision health and genomic testing to prevent or treat a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Bone and skeletal disorders
  • Chronic conditions such as asthma, cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease
  • Genetic disorders
  • HIV
  • Immune deficiency and dysregulation diseases
  • Neurological and neuromuscular disease

Treatments we offer

Our experts develop individualized, advanced precision medicine treatments for our patients. We use genomic testing, biochemical testing and information about lifestyle and health history to develop tailored clinical trials and treatments. Each plan varies based on several factors. Patients receive personalized care and treatments.
