The Division of Multiple Sclerosis Research and Treatment of the Department of Neurology, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, offers a two-to-three-year fellowship in multiple sclerosis (MS)/experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). The program includes clinical training and/or opportunities for research, designed specifically for individuals interested in a career in academic neurology. Required clinical activities for clinical fellows include direct patient care in the MS program. Research activities may include use of MRI in MS, MRI in EAE, basic immunologic studies of peripheral blood cells from MS patients or basic immune studies in EAE, neuroprotection and CNS repair using immunohistopathology and electrophysiology in EAE. The fellow can also participate in one or more clinical or basic research programs being carried out elsewhere in the department, within the Brain Research Institute, Brain Mapping Center or in the Laboratory of Neuroendocrinology. Clinical fellows become eligible for certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Clinical fellowship applicants must have completed a residency in adult neurology and be eligible for a license to practice medicine in the state of California. Basic research fellowship applicants must have completed a PhD or have an MD with some research experience. Applicants should send the Program Director, Rhonda Voskuhl, MD, a brief statement of their career goals, a current curriculum vitae, and two letters of recommendation. Usually, applicants are selected in the late fall prior to the July 1 starting date.

Post doctoral fellows in the MS Program:

  • Stefano Lepore, PhD, MS model neuroimaging
  • Alessia Tassoni, Neurobiology of visual disability in MS

Graduate students in the MS Program:

  • Roy Kim, PhD candidate, next generation estrogen treatments for MS
  • Lisa Golden, PhD candidate, sex differences in MS
  • Cassandra Meyer, PhD candidate, neuropathology in 3-D using CLARITY in MS
