“Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center is a level one trauma center, which means we are tasked with maintaining and safeguarding a blood supply that serves 4.5 million people in western Los Angeles,” explains Matthew Hoffman, the Platelet and Special Donations Coordinator for UCLA Health. “A few years ago, we had a patient who was in a motorcycle accident and needed over 200 units of blood. Without blood donors, we can’t support trauma patients, we can’t support the ongoing needs of surgical patients, and we can’t support cancer patients. Blood isn’t given out at the hospital like a Jell-O cup, so if you need blood, it’s life-saving. Blood donors really are saving people’s lives.”
