UCLA Health’s Neuropathy Program, led by Dr. Anasheh Halabi, has earned a prestigious Center of Excellence designation from the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association (CMTA), recognizing the program’s exceptional, tailored care for patients living with genetic neuropathies, including Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

Dr. Halabi is an associate clinical professor of neurology and neuromuscular medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine and founded UCLA’s Neuropathy Program in 2020.  A Center of Excellence designation exemplifies CMTA’s rigorous standards for clinical expertise, patient-centered care and commitment to the CMT community.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, or CMT, is a progressive genetic condition that affects the peripheral nervous system, disrupting the nerves that connect the brain and the spinal cord to the rest of the body. Over time, CMT can lead to increasing weakness, muscle atrophy, and other debilitating symptoms — underscoring the critical need for specialized coordinated care for patients and their families.

With hundreds of genes linked to CMT and no known cure, patients often need a comprehensive approach to diagnosis, treatment and long-term symptom management. The UCLA Neuropathy Program provides patients with expert support and a path forward.

“For individuals and families living with CMT, access to experienced, skilled care from a doctor who truly understands the disease can make all the difference,” said Laurel Richardson, CMTA’s senior director of community outreach. “Dr. Halabi's commitment to CMT patients means that families have access to coordinated, specialized and compassionate care from a specialist who understands their needs. We are proud to welcome Dr. Halabi to CMTA’s Center of Excellence network and the global community of clinicians dedicated to improving the lives of those living with CMT.”
