Clinical Nutrition Fellowship Program

The UCLA Center for Human Nutrition is delighted to offer physicians the opportunity for fellowship training in Clinical Nutrition.  Fellows receive training at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, one of the leading hospitals in the United States, under the guidance of experienced physicians who are board certified in Internal Medicine and as Physician Nutrition Specialists.

Program Overview

The Clinical Nutrition Fellowship is available to physicians who have completed their residency training in Internal Medicine and are pending or have received board certification in Internal Medicine.  The program typically lasts for 1 year and involves a combination of direct patient care and research opportunities.   One additional year for research is optional.

Fellows will see patients in a variety of different clinical settings. These include in our Clinical Nutrition ClinicCOMET ClinicUCLA Medical Weight Management Program and Adult Enteral and Parental Nutrition clinics.  Fellows will gain expertise in a wide range of nutrition-related conditions including adult obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, lipid disorders, nutritional oncology, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease,  and malnutrition.   Despite this broad range, fellows have the opportunity to focus their areas of interest throughout their training.

Education is also an important component of our fellowship program, not only in the form of didactics for fellows but also in community outreach.  Fellows will have the opportunity to teach in our very popular Healthier Weight Management weekly webinar series.  There are also opportunities for participation in medical student and graduate medical education.  This includes working with rotating medical students, residents and fellows in our clinics, participating in our annual CME event, and teaching first and second year medical students at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine.

The UCLA Center for Human Nutrition has been a leader in cutting-edge research studies for many years.  Fellows are actively involved in patient recruitment and study design, and there are ample opportunities to pursue their own areas of interest within the field of nutrition.

After Fellowship

The fellows who have graduated from our program have gone on to pursue various areas of clinical practice.  Several have completed fellowships in Gastroenterology or become primary care providers while others (Drs. Garcia, Lemieux and Surampudi) have joined our clinical faculty to continue practicing in the growing field of Clinical Nutrition.  By the end of the program, fellows will eligible to take the National Board of Physician Nutrition Specialist and American Board of Obesity Medicine exams.

To apply, email Ms. Gail Thames ([email protected]) and provide your CV and personal statement describing your interest in the fellowship program.
