The Magnet® Journey at UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center

Our Journey to Second Magnet® Designation

UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center (SMCULA) achieved Magnet® recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Recognition Program® for the second time in January, 2021! Only nine percent of U.S. hospitals are recognized as Magnet® organizations so achieving this status and re-designation are evidence of our dedication to excellence. This international recognition is the highest honor for nursing excellence and signifies and unwavering commitment to deliverying exceptional, high-quality patient care.

The Commission on Magnet® voted to award SMUCLA with a second designation noting our transformational leadership, staff engagement, interprofessional teamwork and community involvement. They noted that, "the organization and staff have a firm foundation in a patient-focused mission, relationship-based care and a strong emphasis toward serving patients, families and the community." SMUCLA initially achieved Magnet® designation in June 2016. The various initiatives implemented in pursuit of achieving clinical excellence were highlighted in the SMUCLA re-designation document submitted on May 29, 2020.

SMUCLA was the first UCLA Health facility to implement the Magnet® councils, which integrated into the Professional Governance model in July 2018. SMUCLA nurses are proud to embody this leading-edge practice and be trendsetters within the organization. We are looking forward to our next designation and proud to serve our community!
