Visting MS4 Students at UCLA Orthopaedic Residency Program

Medical students are encouraged to do an externship in order to get a first-hand experience of our program. This a three-week elective designed for the student interested in Orthopaedics or a similar surgical specialty. The student will be assigned to a resident-faculty team for three weeks at UCLA or one of our affiliated hospitals in one of the following subspecialties:

  • Adult Reconstruction
  • Musculoskeletal Oncology
  • Pediatric Orthopaedics
  • Spine
  • Sports Medicine
  • Trauma

Visiting Student Scholarship Program

The UCLA Department of Orthopaedic Surgery strives to foster a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion for faculty, staff, fellows, residents, medical students, and patients.  The Visiting Student Scholarship Program provides financial support for up to two medical students who identify as traditionally underrepresented in the field of orthopaedic surgery and who have applied for the UCLA Orthopaedic Surgery Sub-Internship.

Course Objectives

The course objectives are to expose the student to the treatment and diagnosis of orthopaedic problems through didactics and in the in-and-out-patient and emergency room settings.

  • Strengthen skills in recognizing common patterns of musculoskeletal injury and disease using history, physical exam, and imaging techniques.
  • Enhance problem-solving skills in daily evaluation and management of patients.
  • Learn and demonstrate team work and effective interpersonal communication skills.
  • Obtain exposure to common orthopaedic disorders and create complete differential diagnoses
