Life in LA

The UCLA Pathology Residency Program is located in one of the most exciting cities in the country. Los Angeles offers an endless number of enriching cultural, entertainment, and recreational activities fit for any lifestyle. There is truly something for everyone. Our residents take full advantage of living in beautiful, sunny California and enjoy spending time with family, friends, and each other away from their microscopes.

Food

Foodies, rejoice! Los Angeles is a food mecca with a diverse array of places to dine. The food scene in LA is a big deal, and it’s no coincidence that most of our residents said that trying new restaurants was one of their favorite weekend activities. Besides indulging in delicious food adventures, our residents often make boba/coffee runs and frequent the local farmer’s market that takes place in Westwood Village every Thursday.

Recreational Activities:

Los Angeles is famous for its beaches, and UCLA is just five miles from the nearest one. Popular activities include surfing, biking, playing beach volleyball, and running. If you ask around, there’s always at least one resident who was relaxing at the beach over the weekend. LA also has plenty of hiking trails and bike paths to explore, in addition to scenic campsites and world class ski resorts a short drive away. Even if you’re just going to a local yoga class after work, get ready to switch out those scrubs for some work out gear!

  • Beaches (Malibu, Santa Monica, Venice, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Redondo Beach)
  • Santa Monica Pier
  • Hiking, biking, and camping (Griffith Park, Will Rogers State Park, Joshua Tree National Park)
  • World Class Skiing (Big Bear and Mammoth ski resorts)
  • Classes at local studios/gyms
  • UCLA Recreation Center

Museums/Cultural Attractions:

Los Angeles has some of the most iconic museums and landmarks in the world, with engaging exhibits to bring out the inner artist in every budding pathologist. Even hiking up to the Griffith Observatory and scoping out the night sky gives a “starry sky” pattern a whole new meaning.
There are so many unique attractions to check out in LA. Luckily, our residents have several years to experience everything on their bucket lists.

Sports/Concerts/Misc Venues:

As the entertainment capital of the world, Los Angeles offers a huge variety of activities to please any music lover, theater geek, or sports fan. Our residents frequently organize group outings to catch concerts, plays, Broadway musicals, and movie premieres at charming venues with amazing acoustics. Since LA is home to several sports teams, our residents love getting together to attend games and cheer on our local favorites. There are also multiple family-friendly theme parks nearby for those of us raising children during residency or anyone who’s still a kid at heart.
