About

For an individual who was raised in the Conejo Valley, it holds a particularly rewarding and personal significance to me to be able to provide exceptional medical, surgical, and oncologic care to my community.  Moreover, I am the proud father of two daughters who went to the same high school and middle school that I went to over 50 years ago (in fact they had some of the same teachers!).  My postgraduate education/training includes: UC Berkeley (AB degree), UCLA School of Medicine (MD Degree), and Washington University in St Louis (general surgery residency and surgical oncology fellowship)

Since the day I began my practice in general and oncologic surgery in 1998, one of my main goals was to develop a multidisciplinary cancer program for this community.  I am grateful for the opportunity to join UCLA and become an integral part of the best oncology department in our area, which finally makes this dream a reality.  I truly believe that this will allow for the unsurpassed quality and personalized care our cancer patients deserve.

My interests in Surgical Oncology primarily focuses on breast, GI (colorectal, gastric, esophageal, pancreatic, liver/biliary), endocrine (thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pancreatic), and cutaneous/soft tissue (melanoma, skin cancers, sarcomas) tumors.  I will be providing surgical care for my patients in the UCLA Westlake outpatient clinic, and inpatient care at Los Robles Hospital.  I also perform outpatient surgery at Thousand Oaks Surgical Hospital (TOSH), Specialty Surgery Center in Westlake, and Los Robles SurgiCenter in Thousand Oaks.  While much of my focus is on the multidisciplinary management of breast cancer, my background was in the field of the molecular genetics of endocrine tumors, and I was credited for the discovery of the genetic mutations responsible for the MEN2A syndrome in 1992.

I place a strong emphasis on community involvement.  At Los Robles Hospital, I serve on the Board of Trustees, and I have been the Chair of the Cancer Committee for over 10 years.  I am past Chair of Surgery, past Chair of the OR Committee. and past member of the Medical Executive Committee.  I am the recipient of the American Cancer Society Distinguished Service Honoree, North Star Award for Boy Scouts of America, and the HCA Frist Humanitarian Award.  Since I first returned to the community as a surgeon, I have been supported local organizations, such as the Boy Scouts of America Medical Explorers, Conejo Unified School District, American Cancer Society, Cancer Support Community, New West Orchestra, and the Annual Los Robles Hospital Breast Cancer Symposium.  I am deeply involved in the General Surgery Residency at Los Robles Hospital.

I am proud to be part of UCLA Health and excited to cultivate the profound potential of the future for our community.

Interests

I have a strong interest in Surgical Oncology (breast, GI, endocrine, cutaneous/soft tissue), and have been Chair of the LRH cancer committee for over 10 years.  While much of my focus is on the multidisciplinary management of breast cancer, my background was in molecular genetics of endocrine oncology, and discovered the gene for MEN2A in 1992.
