About

Dr. Lillian Gelberg is Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, Department of Health Policy and Management at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, and Office of Healthcare Transformation and Innovation at the Greater Los Angeles VA. She is an elected member since 2003 of the National Academy of Medicine of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. Dr. Gelberg has been principal investigator or co-investigator on over $90 million of research funding, published over 220 peer-reviewed papers, 16 book chapters, and mentored over 100 young investigators. Her work with diverse, low-income patients and homeless populations, including Veterans and their families, is advancing the national agenda to end homelessness and to promote healthy lifestyle change via integration of prevention into primary care - to reduce risky substance use and prevent progression to opioid and other substance use disorders, address obesity, and prevent metabolic diseases. Her work has been funded by the NIDA, NIDA Clinical Trials Network, PCORI, California Tobacco Related Disease Research Program, VA HSR&D, NIMHD, NCI, NIDDK, NIAAA, NIMH, and others. She has served on numerous editorial boards and a broad range of NIH, NIDA, PCORI and academic committees. Dr. Gelberg’s work has been recognized by nomination to the National Academy of Medicine.  She was the first recipient of the George F. Kneller Endowed Chair at the UCLA School of Medicine. She received the Academy Health 1995 Young Investigator Award and 1997 Article of the Year Award, and in 2001 was the first recipient of the Family Practice Excellence in Research Award from the California Academy of Family Physicians. She received the STFM’s 2009 Curtis Hames Research Award for Lifetime Contribution to Primary Care Research. She is one of the US and Los Angeles’ Top Doctors and Exceptional Women in Medicine.
