About

Dr. Mahad Hassan is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery of the hip and knee. His areas of clinical expertise include advanced hip preservation surgery, femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), and hip labral tears, as well as complex athletic injuries of the knee including ACL reconstruction for growing patients.

Dr. Hassan serves as the Director of Hip Preservation Surgery and an Assistant Professor in Residence at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCLA. Prior to joining the UCLA faculty, he spent five years as an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Minnesota. In recognition of his clinical excellence, patient-centered care, and reputation within the medical community, he was consecutively named Minneapolis/St. Paul Magazine Top Doctors: Rising Star from 2023 to 2026.

In his research, Dr. Hassan focuses on optimizing surgical outcomes and joint mechanics to protect cartilage and maintain long-term function in young, active patients. He actively contributes to multi-center clinical advancements as a member of the Multicenter Arthroscopy Study of the Hip (MASH) study group. A dedicated educator, he has lectured both nationally and internationally on innovation in hip preservation surgery.

Dr. Hassan holds numerous leadership roles within premier professional organizations. He serves on the Bylaws Committee for the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), and on both the Education and Membership Committees for the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy (ISHA), where he also serves as Vice Chair of the Annual Reports Task Force. He is an active member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).

Dedicated to the care of elite athletes, Dr. Hassan’s team coverage responsibilities include serving as an assistant team physician for the Los Angeles Lakers and UCLA football, as well as the head team physician for UCLA men’s soccer, men’s and women’s track, and cross-country teams.
