The doctor gave me time to ask the questions I had. Most answers led to referrals to specialists. Doctor gave me the option to have a Pap smear although wasn’t due one for a few years. I did not have one last year so I chose to have one this year. Doctor was polite and business-like.

The doctor was not proactive in digging into concerns brought up during my physical. The doctor also did not check me for certain routine things that have always been part of my primary-care physicals and instead just said to go to another doctor. The doctor did not sound or seem like she cared to be there. I had to bring up things as well as possible explanations as if I was WebMD instead of receiving advice when I asked for the doctor’s recommendation and possible solutions.

She did not ask about stress, sleep, loneliness, general mental health. She did no breast exam, no EKG, no urinalysis, no hands on exam of my naked body. I am 74. I might have edema, varicose veins, suspicious moles, poor foot care. No gown was offered. I remained fully clothed. She listened to my heart, lungs, felt my throat, abdomen, looked in my ears. She seemed to go down a checklist: did I want a Dexa scan? No, because of radiation. Mammogram? No, same reason. I usually get a thermography. I told her that I wanted a CBC with a few additional tests. She seemed more concerned with her computer that to really look at and relate to this live person she?s examining for the first time. The tech gave me an Advanced Healthcare Directive. There is no one who can be my healthcare agent. Is an agent necessary to ?speak for me?? The Directive itself is my voice. I left the exam in a state of shock. And to think that my insurance will be billed for that quick, superficial exam?! I am going to find another doctor.
