About

Dr. Richard Cheng serves as the Associate Director of Interventional Cardiology (I.C.) at UCLA Health and as the Director of Structural I.C. Research. He specializes in the comprehensive care of patients with heart failure and valvular heart disease. Having trained in both advanced heart failure and structural interventional cardiology, his approach combines medical therapy optimization with minimally invasive surgeries and novel devices that can improve heart function.

Dr. Cheng completed fellowships in cardiology, interventional cardiology, structural heart, and advanced heart failure and transplant at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. His unique dual expertise in advanced heart failure and interventional cardiology—a niche often referred to as "Interventional Heart Failure"—allows him to pioneer the use of minimally invasive procedures and novel mechanical devices to treat patients with the most complex cardiac conditions. His clinical interests also include coronary stents, and valvular and structural heart interventions for the aortic, mitral, and tricuspid valves.

Prior to his appointment at UCLA, Dr. Cheng practiced at UCSF where he established a successful multidisciplinary cardiogenic shock program and served as the Principal Investigator (or Co-PI) for more than 20 clinical trials. Dr. Cheng belongs to the American College of Cardiology, Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, Heart Failure Society of America, International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, and American Heart Association.

Research

Interests

Cheng's research is focused on how to rescue patients in cardiogenic shock or cardiac arrest and on optimizing the performance of minimally invasive repair of leaky heart valves. His research interests include temporary mechanical circulatory support, stents and stent-valves (tiny tubes that can be placed surgically to keep blood vessels open) in patients with heart failure, minimally invasive mitral and tricuspid valve repair, and coronary artery disease after heart transplantation.

He is also active as a site principal investigator in several national and international catheter-based heart failure and valvular heart disease trials and participates in some of their steering committees. He is a facutly at Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics, New York Valves, and Technology and Heart Failure Therapeutics.
