A PICC is inserted through a vein in the arm for the infusion of fluids, medications and nutrients. It may also be used for blood draws.

UCLA has developed a dedicated PICC service to place Midlines and PICC lines. Our team is directly affiliated with UCLA's Interventional Radiology Department (IR). With direct collaborative efforts of IR, the PICC service has successfully placed over 2,500 PICCs annually at UCLA.

Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICC)

When a PICC is ordered, the UCLA PICC Service conducts a thorough evaluation of the patient to determine the most appropriate vascular access device to meet the patient's infusion needs. The procedure is performed at the bedside or in one of the inpatient or outpatient Interventional Radiology suites. The team also makes recommendations and assists with the coordination and placement of other types of vascular access devices.
