Gout is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis affecting 8.3 million US adults. Gout tends to affect men more commonly than women. Gout start to affect women after menopause. While gout is commonly associated with diet, it is primarily due to genetic factors that affect how easily someone can excrete uric acid.
UCLA has an active gout research program. Dr. FitzGerald was the principal investigator for the American College of Rheumatology Gout Guidelines. He is also the principal investigator for the American College of Rheumatology Gout Quality Improvement Measures. UCLA is developing a new lens-free microscope to diagnose gout. UCLA is also studying the relationship between gout and cholesterol.
