Thomas B. Strouse, MD
Medical Director, Stewart and Lynda Resnick
Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA

Dr. Tom Strouse is the medical director of Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA. The facility is considered to be the premier psychiatric hospital in the Western United States and was ranked by U.S. News & World Report in 2013 as the ninth best psychiatric hospital in the country. Dr. Strouse has maintained a faculty appointment at UCLA since he completed his residency training at UCLA in 1991. Immediately thereafter he became director of the UCLA Consultation/Liaison Psychiatry Service and worked closely with the UCLA Liver Transplant Program for more than a decade. Just prior to returning to UCLA full-time, he served for 13 years as director of Cancer Pain Management and Psychosocial Services at the Outpatient Cancer Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He has spent his career working with medically ill adults coping with psychiatric and physical aspects of catastrophic illness.

As a dedicated clinician-teacher, Dr. Strouse is widely recognized for his contributions. In 2003 he received the Robert T. Angarola Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Southern California Cancer Pain Initiative to the individual most allied with improving quality of life for persons with cancer in a given year. He has also been recognized by psychiatry residents with a Top Course Director Award and is repeatedly named in Castle and Connolly's "America's Top Doctors" listings. Dr. Strouse is a Fellow of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine and an American Psychiatric Association Distinguished Fellow. He is board certified in both general psychiatry and pain medicine and is a member of the test committee writing the first-ever board exams for hospice and palliative care medicine. He completed the UCLA Physician Acupuncture Training Program and actively practices acupuncture as a pain physician. Dr. Strouse has published many peer reviewed papers and book chapters and sits on the editorial boards of a number of important journals. He lectures throughout the country on topics related to pain, organ transplant, and psychiatric aspects of medical illness. He is currently a visiting professor of psychiatry at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He was educated at Pomona College and the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
