Our Residents
Rebecca Samuel, MD
Dr. Samuel attended medical school at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans where her lifelong passion for working with underserved populations grew. She is passionate about internal medicine and is especially excited about working with Spanish speaking populations and pursuing further training in HIV and/or palliative care. Outside of the hospital, she can be found long distance running, practicing vinyasa yoga, hiking, swimming, or reading historical fiction and mystery novels.
Nikko Gonzales, MD
Dr. Gonzales graduated from medical school at the University of California, San Francisco where he participated in PRIME-US (Program in Medical Education for the Urban Underserved). He is interested in outpatient and inpatient general internal medicine, and initiatives that promote diversity, equity and inclusion in the healthcare field.
Patrick DeGregorio, MD
Dr. DeGregorio, originally from Detroit, graduated from medical school at Cornell. He is passionate about how health is affected by the communities in which people live and is committed to learning about his patients’ needs and how to best support them. Outside of medicine, Dr. DeGregorio is a huge fan of the outdoors, having backpacked from Mexico to Canada!
Thais Salles Araujo, MD
Dr. Araujo grew up in Brazil and completed medical school at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in 2015 and her internal medicine residency at the Instituto da Previdencia dos Servidores do Estado (IPSEMG) in 2018. Her interests are integrative health and humanistic care.
Kaahukane Leite-Ah Yo, MD
Dr. Leite-Ah Yo attended the John A. Burns School of Medicine in Hawaii and graduated with a certificate of distinction in Native Hawaiian Health. His clinical interests include indigenous health, social determinants of health, and preventative medicine. When not in the clinic you can find him at the beach playing volleyball, surfing, or hiking.
Spencer Chang, MD
Dr. Chang obtained his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine, where he was a part of the Primary Care Leadership Track. His academic interests are in Asian Pacific Islander health disparities, medical education, infectious diseases, and health care access for underserved and rural communities. Outside of medicine, Dr. Chang loves cooking, exercising, and exploring restaurants and coffee shops.
Katie Fruin, MD
Dr. Katie Fruin is from Chicago, where she obtained her medical degree from Rush Medical College and trained at both Rush and Cook County Hospital. Dr. Fruin is passionate about how she can design and leverage primary care to support patients in operationalizing their dreams for themselves, their families and their communities. Her current activism interests include how creating medical-financial partnerships and pathways to building wealth can improve physical and mental health outcomes.
Madeline Treasure, MD
Dr. Madeline Treasure graduated from Stanford University before receiving her medical degree from the University of North Carolina. She is interested in value-based care and QI driven systems improvement initiatives as well as women’s health advocacy. She hopes to use clinical experience to influence and improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare delivery. In her free time, she enjoys all forms of outdoor physical activity including running, hiking, and playing sports with friends.
Christine Willinger, MD
Dr. Christine Willinger is a California transplant from the Northeast. Dr. Willinger obtained her medical degree and master’s degree in public health from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She is particularly interested in chronic disease management for vulnerable populations, geriatric medicine, and end-of-life care. Outside of the hospital, she enjoys yoga, cooking, hanging out with her cat, and exploring the many hiking trails around Los Angeles.
Phillip Chen, MD
Dr. Phillip Chen obtained his medical degree from the David Geffen School of Medicine - UCLA. Dr. Chen’s particular interests are in Asian Pacific Islander community health, LGBTQ+ health, substance-use and addiction medicine, and preventative health. In his free time, he enjoys dancing (urban choreography), photography and staying active.
Damond Ng, MD
Dr. Damond Ng obtained his MD and MPH from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA as part of the PRIME-LA program. He was born and raised in San Francisco, studied biochemistry at UCLA, and served as an AmeriCorps member in his hometown. Damond is passionate about health equity, narrative medicine, medical education, and social justice with healthcare as a human right. In his free time, Damond enjoys camping, hiking, museums, and cooking.
Sarah Takimoto, MD
Dr. Sarah Takimoto attended medical school at the UCSF School of Medicine. She is passionate about medical education, addiction medicine, addressing health inequities within primary care, and improving care for vulnerable populations through systems improvement projects. Sarah was born in Bethesda, Maryland but spent most of her childhood in Boerne, Texas and Dresher, Pennsylvania.
Kevin Truong, MD, MBA
Dr. Truong is a second-year primary care resident. He attended UCLA for medical school and did a joint MBA as part of the PRIME-LA program. This education combination only further emphasized his goal of finding sustainable solutions to health care disparities through systems-science and innovation.
Cameron Hines, MD
Dr. Hines is a second-year primary care resident who obtained their medical degree from Charles R. Drew University/David Geffen School of Medicine, a joint program between both medical schools geared towards training providers to serve underserved communities. Dr. Hines’s current interest in medicine is in geriatrics and palliative care. He is greatly looking forward to gaining more experience with this field and these patient populations as he continues his journey through residency.
Jessica Osorio, MD
Dr. Osorio is a second-year primary care resident who obtained their medical degree from the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. Her interests are many but specifically are: immigrant health; geriatrics, and increasing health care access to all. Jessica enjoys hiking, swimming, and spending time at the beach.
Daniel Gonzalez, MD
Dr. Gonzalez is a second-year primary care resident in the Olive View/Santa Clarita track. Dr. Gonzalez received his medical degree from Harvard as well as a BA in International Health and Development from the University of Denver. He identifies as a first-generation college/medical school graduate and a second-generation Mexican-American.
Clarence Lee, MD
Dr. Lee is a second-year primary care resident who obtained their medical degree from UC Davis. His interests are chronic disease management and infectious diseases. Dr. Lee’s long-term goal is to practice primary care. And outside of medicine, he is interested in trying difference cuisines, playing basketball, and expanding his knowledge on critical race and ethnic studies.
Emily Chang, MD
Dr. Chang obtained her medical degree from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She was born and raised in San Francisco and studied Ethnic Studies and Health & Human Biology at Brown University. Dr. Chang's clinical and academic interests include general internal medicine, social determinants of health, and community medicine. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, spending time with family/friends, and exploring new restaurants.
Elyssa Berg, MD, MPH
Dr. Berg is a second-year primary care resident who obtained her medical degree from Texas A&M College of Medicine. Before medical school, she received her MPH at the University of Texas at Houston and worked for several years on community interventions focused on integrating CHWs into clinical care. Dr. Berg's clinical interests include metabolic syndrome and functional medicine.
Anna-Claire Siena, MD
Dr. Siena is a second-year primary care resident who obtained her medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Her interests include preventative health, health equity and education. Outside of medicine, Dr. Siena loves to explore the outdoors, playing with her dog, cooking, and gardening.
Daniel Stokes, MD, MS
Dr. Stokes is a second-year primary care resident who grew up in the Boston area. He obtained a master's degree in epidemiology from the Brazilian National School of Public Health, in Rio De Janeiro, and later his medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Daniel’s primary interests both clinically and in public health are in health equity and in narrative medicine.
Ruth Miranda, MD
Dr. Ruth Miranda is a second-year primary care resident who obtained their medical degree from Charles R. Drew/David Geffen School of Medicine and part of the PRIME-LA program. Her interests are in health disparities research, global health, healthy policy, and medical education. Dr. Miranda's long term goal is to improve health care for vulnerable populations. Outside of medicine, Ruth practices in long distance running, CrossFit, and traveling.
Jessica Fernandez, MD
Dr. Fernandez is a current resident in the primary care track and a “Bruin for life.” Being born and raised in Los Angeles, Dr. Fernandez attended UCLA for undergrad and obtained her medical degree from the combined David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science program. Her interests include addressing health disparities and social equity issues, but her passion can be found in teaching.
Diana Lopez, MD
Dr. Lopez is a second-year resident in the Primary Care-Olive View Santa Clarita track. She obtained her medical degree from the Charles R Drew/UCLA Medical program. Dr. Lopez was born and raised in South Los Angeles and attended UC Berkeley for her undergraduate education. Her interests include immigration health and increasing diversity in the health field. Outside of medicine, she enjoys running and spending time with her family.
Rachael Abraham, MD
Dr. Rachael Abraham is a first-year primary care resident in the Olive View/Santa Clarita Track. She obtained her medical degree from UC Irvine. Rachael is passionate about working with LA's underserved community and about addressing health disparities at a systems level. Outside of medicine, she loves going to the beach, exploring new food spots, and enjoying happy hour with her co-residents.
Natalie Bouri, MD
Dr. Natalie Bouri is a primary care resident who was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. She completed her undergraduate studies at UCLA before pursuing a medical degree at the California University of Science and Medicine in the Inland Empire. Her clinical interests include community health, preventative health, and health disparities. Outside of medicine Dr. Bouri enjoys spending time with family and exploring restaurants and coffee shops.
Kelly Cheung, MD
Dr. Kelly Cheung is a first-year resident and went to Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU/MCV) for medical school! Her long-term goal is to specialize in geriatrics and palliative care and care for underserved populations in the hospital and in the clinic. Outside of medicine, she runs a website/Instagram page called Kelly Takes Medicine and enjoys spending time with her lab Lany, watching movies/football, and traveling!
Senxi Du, MD
Dr. Senxi Du is a PC resident in the Olive View/Santa Clarita track. She obtained her medical degree from Keck School of Medicine of USC. She chose the OVSC track because she enjoys working with the county hospital population. She is interested in health systems, quality improvement, medical education, and health disparities. Outside of medicine, she enjoys doing yoga and Barry's, going to happy hour, exploring the amazing food in LA, and hanging out with her friends and husband.
Janice Grandi, MD
Dr. Janice Grandi is a first-year primary care resident who obtained her medical degree from UCSF. Her interests are geriatrics, SSDOH, and medical education. Her long-term goal is to work as an outpatient geriatrician. Outside of medicine, she is interested in hiking, her tiny dog, and eating as much ice cream as possible.
Joshua Jiang, MD
Dr. Joshua Jiang is a resident in the Olive View/Santa Clarita track. He comes to LA from his home state of New York, where he completed medical school at NYU. His interests include medical education, ethics, and humanities. His long-term goals are to develop, practice, and teach a form of medicine that balances thoughtfulness with expedience and encourages a moral conception of the work undertaken. Outside of medicine, he enjoys cooking, biking, and exploring LA's many neighborhoods.
Lauren Matsuno, MD
Dr. Lauren Matsuno is a first-year primary care resident who obtained her medical degree from UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. Her interests are primary care, geriatrics, and working with marginalized communities. Her long-term goal is to work in a primary care setting based in California/Hawai’i to serve older adults in our communities. Outside of medicine, she is interested in tennis, exploring the local beaches, and creating floral arrangements!
Nathan McLaughlin, MD
Dr. Nathan McLaughlin is a primary care resident from Puyallup, WA. He obtained his medical degree from University of Washington School of Medicine. He is passionate about building long-term relationships with patients and providing primary/preventative care to vulnerable/underserved communities. He hopes to pursue further training in LGBTQIA+ health and HIV management. Outside of medicine, he enjoys singing karaoke with friends, exploring local bars/restaurants, and playing beach volleyball.
Vi Nguyen, MD
Dr. Vi Nguyen is from Chino, California and obtained her medical degree from University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She is interested in extensivist care, particularly to support those who are under- and un-insured, palliative care, and initiatives that promote diversity and equity amongst physicians. In her free time, she enjoys spending time on west LA’s beautiful trails and beaches, rock climbing, and otherwise picking up then promptly putting down other new hobbies.
Sophie Rosenmoss, MD
Dr. Sophie Rosenmoss is a first-year primary care resident. She attended medical school at Boston University. Her interests include the health of patients experiencing homelessness, patients with substance use disorders, LGBTQ+ patients, and patients impacted by the carceral system. Her advocacy interests include housing policy, harm reduction, access to opioid use disorder treatments, social needs/social care, decarceration/abolition, and reproductive justice.
Laura Santangelo, MD
Dr. Laura Santangelo is originally from St. Louis. She obtained her medical degree from University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. Dr. Santangelo’s academic and clinical interests include general internal medicine, women’s health and health policy. Outside of medicine, Laura enjoys exploring Los Angeles and California for the first time. She also enjoys hiking, reading, and trying new recipes.
Alexis Velazquez, MD
Dr. Alexis Velazquez is a native of the Sacramento Valley, calling Grimes, CA his hometown. Dr. Velazquez obtained his MD from UCSF and graduated from the Program in Medical Education (PRIME). In medicine, his interests include the barriers non-English speaking, immigrant populations face in accessing and utilizing healthcare. Outside of medicine, Dr. Velazquez enjoys golf, playing video games/board games, and spending time with his many nieces and nephews.
