About Us
The UCLA Division of Rheumatology is a nationally ranked for patient care and research in rheumatic disease. Division faculty and laboratories discover and develop new treatments for a wide range of rheumatic conditions — including rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren's syndrome, gout, inflammatory myositis, and many others — and conduct large-scale interventional and observational clinical trials that give patients the opportunity to benefit from the latest advances in care. Our world-class fellowship program in rheumatic disease produces leaders in rheumatology who continue to progress the field through high-level roles in public service, academia and industry.
Some of our recent research discoveries include:
- New genes and gene regions that predispose to lupus, myositis, or rheumatoid arthritis; we are dedicated to understanding how they work.
- A novel set of biomarkers that predict accelerated atherosclerosis in systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis.
- Insight into how the hormone leptin (from fat cells) promotes autoimmunity.
- Ultrasound studies of joints identify people with hidden joint inflammation.
- A specialized cell in the skin can be manipulated to protect mice from severe lupus dermatitis.
- Novel methods for visualizing gout and pseduogout crystals.
