Nuclear Medicine

Education

The Department of Nuclear Medicine and Theranostics educates and trains the next generation of nuclear medicine specialists through our nuclear medicine residency and fellowship programs. We offer residents and fellows the opportunity to train with cutting-edge technologies and techniques in world-class settings at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and the UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center.

Our nuclear medicine residents and fellows receive specialized training in diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine while being mentored by leaders in the field. They have access to our high-impact clinical, translational, and foundational science research programs, and many have attained prestigious leadership positions within the US and beyond.

If you are interested in a program that combines training in molecular imaging, theranostics, and radiopharmaceutical therapy, then UCLA Health might be right for you.

Training opportunities offered through our nuclear medicine residency and fellowship program include:

Nuclear Medicine Residency

Our one- to three-year ACGME/ABNM-certified nuclear medicine residency provides comprehensive training in state-of-the art diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine applications. Residents are taught the six ACGME Core Competencies and how they relate to the practice of nuclear medicine and safe and effective patient care. The Program accepts two to five residents each year and participates in the National Residency Matching Program and the ERAS System.

Prospective residents should complete the ERAS common application form and submit a Resident Application via email to our program director and program coordinator (see Contact Information below).

Cross-Training Residencies

In addition to our dedicated nuclear medicine residency, we offer one and two-year residencies to radiology and internal medicine residents seeking cross-training in nuclear medicine.

Fellowships

Through our Christiaan Schiepers Fellowship, our program offers one- and two-year fellowships in Nuclear Medicine and a one-year fellowship in Theranostics to individuals who have completed a Radiology or Nuclear Medicine residency program and are board-certified or board-eligible for the American Board of Radiology or the American Board of Nuclear Medicine.

We offer additional fellowship training pathways for American Board of Nuclear Medicine eligibility to individuals who have completed residencies in other disciplines. We also offer cross-training fellowships through our Joint Fellowship Program with the Department of Radiation Oncology and our close training collaboration with the Division of Cardiology.

Prospective fellows should submit their Fellowship Application via email to our program coordinator (see Contact Information below).
