C5 Fellows Education Series in Gynecologic Oncology participants

The first annual C5 (University of California Programs) Fellows Education Series in Gynecologic Oncology was held in December on the campus of University of California, San Diego (UCSD).  The meeting brought together gynecologic oncology fellows and faculty from the University of California programs in the spirit of education, collegiality, and collaboration.  Presentations and discussions focused on the most noteworthy scientific and clinical advances of 2021.

C5 Conference

The meeting kicked off on Friday evening with a talk by Dr. John Chan, Director of Gynecologic Oncology at Sutter Health.  On Saturday morning, UC fellows and faculty reviewed more than 20 clinical trials and published studies from 2021 that influenced clinical care for patients with gynecologic malignancies. In the afternoon, the faculty conducted a surgical lab at UCSD’s Center for the Future of Surgery and fellows focused on bowel resections, lymph node dissection, vascular repair, and use of hemostatic agents.

The meeting was organized by UCLA and chaired by Ritu Salani, MD, MBA, UCLA Gynecologic Oncology Division Director and Michael McHale, MD, UCSD Gynecologic Oncology Division Director.  In Dr. Salani’s closing comments at the meeting, she announced that the UC Gynecologic Oncology Division Directors intend for the meeting to become an annual event.  She said, “This conference, through the support of our industry partners, allowed us to start a collaboration between the gynecologic oncology fellowships that promotes education, enhances research collaboration, and forms friendship for years to come.”
