Course Description & Requirements

COURSES: Selective: MSI & MSII | Elective: MSIII & MSIV | Chiefs

David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA students at all levels of their medical education can be involved in the homeless clinics. By participating, students receive course credit towards their medical degree and gain firsthand experience in community-based clinical care.

Please note: Both the Selective & Elective Courses are longitudinal experiences.

Selective: MSI & MSII

Period of Participation: October 2016 - June 2017

  • Orientation Session
  • 6 clinics
  • Attendance to at least 2 lunchtime lectures
  • Attendance at the mid-year (Jan) and end-of-year (May) reflection sessions or a 1-2 page reflective paper on an experience at a clinic (email to Barbara Zokin)

All requirements must be completed by June 1, 2017. Fulfills requirement for one Selective done in either the first or second year.

Elective: MSIII & MSIV

FP253.03
(One week of 200-level credit)

Period of Participation
3rd Year Students: July 2016 - June 2017 
4th Year Students: July 2016 - May 2017

  • Orientation Session
  • 7 clinics
  • 1 educational activity from the list below:
    • Teach MS1/2 on-site: H&P, assessment and plan, writing notes (extra clinic)
    • On-site presentation/lecture to MS1/MS2s
      • Lecture ideas: skin infections, schizophrenia, intimate partner violence, asthma, hypertension, diabetes, tuberculosis
    • Facilitate a Smoking Cessation session for residents at Samoshel or the Winter Shelters
    • Provide an educational lecture to the residents at Samoshel or the Winter Shelters
    • Other activity approved by the Course Chair
  • Attendance at the mid-year (Jan) and end-of-year (May) reflection sessions or a 1-2 page reflective paper on an experience at a clinic (email to Barbara Zokin)

MSIII: All requirements must be completed by June 1, 2017.
MSIV: All requirements must be completed by May 1, 2017. (Can fulfill Primary Care College requirement)

Chiefs

FP150.01, FP250.03
(One week of 100-level credit and one week of 200-level credit)
(Total: two weeks of credit)

Period of Participation: April 2016 - May 2017

  • Orientation Session
  • 7 clinics
  • 1 educational activity as described above under MSIII/IV requirements
  • Manage various components of the SRHC clinics, including: planning clinic budget and
    purchases, managing patient records, organizing clinic layout and patient flow, procuring
    medical supplies and medication stocks, scheduling clinics, recruiting volunteers, and
    attendings, providing immunizations, and coordinating the health care team under the
    supervision of the attending faculty.
All requirements must be completed by May 1, 2017.
