UCLA Health excellence in pediatric hospital medicine

Our experienced pediatric hospitalists (hospital-based doctors) are specially trained to care for infants and children while they’re in the hospital. We oversee your child’s inpatient care and communicate with their pediatrician after they’re discharged. Highlights of our program include:

Comprehensive inpatient care: Our hospitalists are on site at both the Westwood and Santa Monica campuses 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We collaborate with your child’s primary care doctor to deliver seamless, coordinated care in the hospital setting. When you go home, we share information about your child’s stay with their pediatrician and other specialists.

Compassionate, family-centered support: We know that a hospital stay can be stressful for you and your child. Our experienced hospital doctors take time to educate children and family members so you feel comfortable and informed. Every member of your child’s care team ensures that you understand the care plan during your hospital stay and after you take your child home.

Multispecialty approach: As leaders in pediatric hospital medicine, we work closely with other physicians, nurses, social workers and Child Life Specialists. We provide nursery coverage and consultative services to several departments, including surgical subspecialties, emergency medicine and psychiatry.

Streamlined access to medical records: When your child is admitted to the hospital, pediatric hospitalists can access their UCLA Health medical records. We review their health history, including medications, previous lab tests and imaging studies. With this information at our fingertips, we can deliver prompt treatments and the most appropriate care.

Focus on quality and safety: UCLA Health hospitalists are committed to improving patient safety in the hospital. Our hospital medicine specialists pioneer quality and safety programs to keep patients and staff healthy. We work as a team to deliver safe, effective care every day.

What is a pediatric hospitalist?

While your child is in the hospital, they receive care from a hospitalist, or hospital doctor. A pediatric hospitalist is a physician who specializes in caring for babies, children and adolescents in a hospital setting. Hospitalists are skilled at treating a wide range of medical conditions, from common to complex.

If your child needs to stay in the hospital over the course of several days, they might see more than one pediatric hospitalist. You may be wondering if your child’s pediatrician or other specialists will be involved in your child’s inpatient care. Rest assured, your pediatric hospitalist communicates with your child’s care team during and after their stay in the hospital. We share information about your child’s medications, health conditions and medical history.

When your child is discharged from the hospital, UCLA Health pediatric hospitalists ensure a smooth transition home. We help you arrange follow-up visits, schedule medical tests, understand your child’s care plan and take the appropriate next steps.
