What is Patient- and Family-Centered Care?

  • A multidisciplinary approach to the planning, delivery, and evaluation of health care that is rooted in mutually beneficial partnerships between healthcare providers, patients and families.
  • Practitioners acknowledge the vital role that families play in ensuring the well-being of pediatric patients of all ages, maintaining dignity and respect to patients, and families.
  • An approach to healthcare that leads to appropriate allocation of resources, collaborative communication, greater patient and family satisfaction, and better outcomes.

Patient- and Family-Centered Care Mission:

  • Provide high-quality, research-based, comprehensive healthcare to pediatric patients and families by:
    • Blending patient care, education, and research in a caring environment
    • Allowing the family to define its members
    • Identifying familial and cultural preferences regarding a patient's health
    • Providing care that is compassionate, and relevant to the needs and expectations of our patients and families
    • Creating a healing, supportive environment that respects privacy
    • Encouraging familial participation, and autonomy regarding healthcare through comprehensive programs and education
    • Evaluating experiences, practice modifications, educational programs, and environment to continually improve care

Patient- and Family-Centered Care Vision:

  • UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital embraces a philosophy of PFCC, understanding that the well-being of children is dependent upon participation from family.
  • We promote respectful, collaborative partnerships between healthcare staff and families.
  • We encourage familial questions and contributions, valuing families as central to children's health and well-being, and partners in care.
