The Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, has an opening for a full-time Assistant Project Scientist. The Assistant Project Scientist will perform independent research investigating the role of iron in the development of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a chronic and severe cardiopulmonary disease that results in heart failure and death. Their work will focus on 1) developing and characterizing a mouse or rat model of iron deficiency in PAH using MCT and SuHypoxia models, 2) Using animal models to elucidate the mechanisms that link iron deficiency and PAH, including iron and hypoxia sensing pathways, mitochondrial dysfunction, the BMP pathway, etc., 3) Testing interventions in PAH models for mechanistic study and for therapeutic investigations. The Assistant Project Scientist will also be responsible for assisting and training less experienced trainees and/or staff researchers, preparing manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications, and assisting with the preparation of grant proposals.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in biomedical sciences (or a related field) is required.
  • Minimum of 4 years of postdoctoral experience in biomedical research with a focus on murine models of pulmonary hypertension is required.

Required Skills:

  • Aptitude and willingness to work with murine models, including handling, managing colonies, procedures, breeding, and harvesting.
  • Experience with murine models of pulmonary hypertension, including MCT and SuHypoxia.
  • Assessments of pulmonary vascular disease in murine models, including right heart catheterization.
  • Routine laboratory techniques, including Western blots, ELISA, IHC, flow cytometry, colorimetry, DNA and RNA extraction, qRT-PCR, microscopy, and cell culture.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and troubleshoot as needed
  • Ability and willingness to learn and optimize new scientific protocols
  • The organizational ability to maintain all records accurately and completely
  • Ability to use a computer and standard programs (MS Office, etc.)
  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn various research software programs, e.g. statistical and graphing software

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Communicate directly and frequently with the Principal Investigator.
  • With minimal supervision, carry out experiments, analyze and graph the results, interpret the data, and troubleshoot and optimize as necessary.
  • Work on multiple tasks and projects efficiently.
  • Participate actively in twice weekly laboratory meetings, including presenting work-in-progress data and presenting at journal club.
  • Prepare manuscripts and assist with grant submissions.
  • Assist with general laboratory maintenance.

The Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA is seeking applicants for a full-time Adjunct faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank. A PhD is required. The candidate will conduct research that investigates the role of iron human health and disease; improving the diagnosis of iron disorders, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer research, interstitial lung disease, and pulmonary vascular disease.

The candidate is expected to participate in pulmonary and health sciences research, and will prepare and submit grant applications as necessary for career development and funding.
