Neurobehavioral Genetics Research Fellowship

Directors: Daniel H. Geschwind, MD, PhD, Nelson Freimer, MD, Carrie Bearden, PhD

This NIH-funded pre-doctoral and postdoctoral program provides 4 slots per year to pursue training in mentor laboratories in genetics, neurobiology, and cognitive neuroscience related to disorders of the nervous system, focusing on those that overlap with the domains of neurology and psychiatry. The program includes a core curriculum with a thematic course centered on phenotyping of the nervous system in human and animal models and involves a strongly committed core set of faculty members, providing a vibrant and interactive environment. Semel.ucla.edu >

We particularly seek qualified minority candidates from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups; individuals with disabilities; and individuals from economically, socially, culturally, or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds. In keeping with the program's goals, preference will be given to applicants who are training in neuroscience, genetics, bioinformatics, psychology or human genetics, although we also seek outstanding applicants with other backgrounds.

Neurogenetics Clinical and Research Fellowships

Director: Brent L. Fogel, MD, PhD

The UCLA Neurogenetics Program is nationally and internationally recognized for excellence in the clinical diagnosis and management of neurodevelopmental and neurogenetic disease. The UCLA Neurogenetics Clinic utilizes state-of-the-art technologies including clinical exome sequence to diagnose rare neurogenetic disorders including various forms of leukodystrophy and spastic paraparesis as well as metabolic and mitochondrial conditions affecting the nervous system. Clinicians and researchers at UCLA are involved in national and international research collaborations on a variety of molecular studies and clinical trials involving various neurogenetic disorders such as Huntington disease, Spinocerebellar Ataxia, Friedreich Ataxia, and more. Researchers in the Neurogenetics Program are also working to identify new genes which cause both rare and common neurologic diseases using cutting-edge genomic technologies including exome and genome sequencing. The work within the program is funded by multiple grants from the National Institute of Health and several private foundations covering a wide range of genetic diseases including Spinocerebellar Ataxia, Autism, and many others.
