Dr. Steven Mittelman, chief of pediatric endocrinology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and member of the UCLA Health Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, has received the 2026 Outstanding Mentor Award from the Pediatric Endocrine Society. The honor recognizes exceptional skill, dedication and sustained service in mentoring junior faculty and trainees.

Mittelman’s career is defined by interdisciplinary research and a commitment to developing the next generation of investigators. His mentorship roles have spanned clinical and bench research, endocrinology, oncology and related disciplines. By supporting trainees at every stage of their academic journey, Mittelman has helped build a strong pipeline for academic medicine, contributing to the success of numerous junior faculty researchers at UCLA Health and beyond.

Mentees credit Mittelman with shaping their research trajectories and fostering innovative, multidisciplinary “bench-to-bedside-and-back” research programs, including nationally recognized work at the intersection of obesity and acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Mittelman’s mentorship titles have included fellowship director, MD/Ph.D. program director, associate vice chair of translational research for the UCLA Children’s Discovery and Innovations Institute, and training director for the Department of Pediatrics Child Health Research Career Development Award Program, funded by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
