Dr. Kara Calkins, professor of pediatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, has been recognized with the Serge and Yvette Dadone Clinical Teaching Award for her contributions to clinical education and patient care.

Calkins is known for her pioneering work in treating intestinal failure-associated liver disease, a severe condition affecting children who are reliant on intravenous nutrition. She was among the first to administer intravenous fish oil to pediatric patients under compassionate use protocols, a practice that significantly improved outcomes and informed the development of a new drug application. This treatment received approval from the Food and Drug Administration in 2018.

In addition to her clinical work, Calkins has demonstrated a sustained commitment to medical education, mentoring students and residents with a scholarly approach to clinical teaching. The Dadone award celebrates faculty who exemplify excellence in clinical teaching, and Calkins’ contributions have had a lasting impact on both her students and the field of pediatric medicine.
