UCLA Health opens radiation oncology treatment center in Santa Clarita

UCLA Health has made accessing world-class cancer care easier and more convenient for Santa Clarita-area residents with the opening of a new radiation oncology treatment center at the UCLA Santa Clarita Community Cancer Clinic.

The new state-of-the-art radiation treatment center marks UCLA Health's first radiation treatment facility created specifically to serve patients in the Santa Clarita and San Fernando Valley communities.

The center is located at 27235 Tourney Road, adjacent the UCLA cancer clinic, where UCLA hematologist-oncologists diagnose and treat patients with breast, prostate, gastrointestinal, blood and other types of cancer. A chemotherapy infusion center is also onsite.

With the addition of the radiation treatment center, patients now have access to the full range of nationally recognized cancer services provided by UCLA Health and the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, including more than 600 UCLA cancer clinical trials.

"Having access to the most advanced radiation treatments science and technology can offer right here in the community is important," said Michael Xiang, MD, PhD, UCLA radiation oncologist and medical director of the new UCLA Health treatment center. "In some cases, radiation therapy can last weeks and even months, so being close to home – and your support system – makes treatment easier and more manageable for patients and their families."

Dr. Xiang, also an assistant clinical professor of radiation oncology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, along with physicists and other health care professionals, will create individual advanced radiation treatment plans for patients, which may include intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), or other cutting-edge adaptive radiation technologies.

Dr. Xiang, who received his MD and PhD from Harvard Medical School, is comprehensively trained to treat all cancer types and all sites of disease.

"The opening of the new radiation oncology center is a clear example of UCLA Health's commitment to providing comprehensive and world-class cancer treatment close to where patients live and work – in their own communities," said Lisa Wilen, clinical director of UCLA Health's Oncology Community Practices. "We have 19 cancer clinics located throughout Central and Southern California, including Burbank, Porter Ranch, Encino and Westlake Village cancer clinics. And patients at any of these clinics may also choose to receive their radiation treatment in Santa Clarita Valley."

As with all UCLA Health medical facilities, the radiation center has taken steps to protect patients and staff from COVID-19 by screening patients, visitors and staff before they enter the building, universal masking and physical distancing in waiting rooms. Enhanced disinfecting and sterilizing procedures are conducted throughout the day.

The radiation oncology treatment center is located at 27235 Tourney Road, Suite 1400 in Santa Clarita and is open weekdays from 8am to 5 pm.
