UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital ranked in California’s top 5 and once again was recognized for broad excellence in a widely watched assessment of pediatric care.

For the 16th consecutive year, multiple pediatric subspecialties were among the nation’s best in the annual Best Children’s Hospitals rankings published June 13 by U.S. News & World Report.

Seven pediatric subspecialties were ranked. They are: cancer; gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery; neonatology; nephrology; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopaedics; and urology.

“UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital offers the most advanced treatments and supports the whole family to help ensure the best possible care for our pediatric patients,” said Johnese Spisso, president of UCLA Health and CEO of the UCLA Hospital System. “This recognition reflects the extraordinary dedication and skill of our physicians, nurses, therapists and other health care professionals who collaborate every day to provide world-class care.”

The Best Children’s Hospitals methodology includes clinical data and a national survey of pediatric specialists. Among other considerations, factors include patient outcomes, infection rates, available clinical resources, compliance with best practices and efforts to promote health equity.

“We are honored and humbled to provide family-centered, state-of-the-art medical and surgical services to children in a compassionate environment, from the most complex care to more frequent well-child and preventive care visits,” said Sherin Devaskar, MD, physician-in-chief of Mattel Children’s Hospital and UCLA Mattel Executive Endowed Chair in the department of pediatrics.

The hospital is located within Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center on UCLA’s campus in the Westwood area of Los Angeles. UCLA Health also has a pediatric unit at UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center and offers general and specialty pediatric care at multiple locations across Southern California.

UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital pediatric subspecialty areas have performed well each year since the U.S. News assessment debuted in 2007.

“Choosing the right hospital for a sick child is a critical decision for many parents,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News. “The Best Children’s Hospitals rankings spotlight hospitals that excel in specialized care.”
