UCLA physician-scientist honored with lifetime achievement award in medical genetics

Dr. Stephen Cederbaum, a longtime UCLA Health physician and renowned expert in genetic medicine, has been awarded the 2025 David L. Rimoin Lifetime Achievement Award by the ACMG Foundation for Genetic and Genomic Medicine. The award honors a career dedicated to advancing science and improving lives. 

A visionary in the field of medical genetics, Dr. Cederbaum is recognized for his seminal research on urea cycle disorders and his leadership in building clinical, research and advocacy programs to improve care for patients with rare metabolic diseases. He has mentored countless students and faculty members and remains actively engaged in the academic community.

Dr. Cederbaum joined UCLA in 1971, working alongside the late Dr. Rimoin, for whom the award is named. He spent most of his five-decade career at UCLA, where he remains active today as a board member of the UCLA University Club (formerly known as the Faculty Club).

Known for his warmth, mentorship and humility, Dr. Cederbaum has spent more than 50 years advancing care through science, advocacy and education. His legacy includes the development of UCLA’s clinical program for inborn errors of metabolism, as well as decades of groundbreaking work on arginase deficiency and other rare disorders. His research has helped shape national newborn screening guidelines and improve care for underserved patients.
