Philip Scumpia Lab

Research: Philip Scumpia Laboratory at UCLA

Dr. Scumpia is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and a clinical dermatologist and dermatopathologist at UCLA and the West LA VAMC. He is a member of the I3T Theme at UCLA. Dr. Scumpia graduated from the University of Florida College of Medicine with his M.D and completed his PhD from the University of Florida in Microbiology and Immunology. He completed residency training in Dermatology followed by Dermatopathology fellowship training at UCLA. Dr. Scumpia completed post doctoral training in the STAR program at UCLA with Dr. Stephen Smale. The Scumpia Lab investigates transcriptional control of immune responses in skin diseases including wound healing, infection, and skin cancer. A major focus is to translate mechanistic findings into novel therapies and diagnostics for skin disease. One translational project involves the development of immunomodulatory biomaterials for wound healing, cutaneous regeneration, vaccines, and cancer immunotherapies. Dr. Scumpia was a recipient of a Dermatology Foundation Career Development Award and an NIH K Award. Dr. Scumpia currently serves as Director of Dermatopathology at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center and leads the Dermatopathology and Immunology curriculum for the UCLA Dermatology residency program. The Scumpia Lab is currently funded by grants from the NIH (NIAMS R01), LEO Foundation, and VA (Merit award).

Postdoctoral Fellow in Skin Immunology/Systems Biology Research at the Scumpia Laboratory

This postdoctoral position is focused on understanding how the immune system contributes to skin disease toward our understanding of cutaneous wound healing, cutaneous infection, inflammatory skin disease, vaccine biology, and skin cancer. The laboratory is affiliated with the Department of Medicine/Division of Dermatology, the I3T, Bioengineering, and the UCLA Health Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center (Tumor Cell Biology Program) at the University of California, Los Angeles.


The ideal candidate must have extensive experience in transgenic/knockout animal models, handling RNA, DNA and protein. His or her skill set should include:
•        Immunohistochemistry
•        Single cell and/or spatial transcriptomics
•        FACS analysis
•        Immuno-blotting
•        Mammalian cell culture
•        CRISPR knockout
•        Microscopy
•        Small animal work

Interested individuals should have:
•        Strength in bioinformatic skills, a significant advantage
•        Fluency in English and strong written and oral communication skills: Prerequisites
•        Permanent U.S. residency or citizenship: Preferred but not required
•        At least one first-authored publication in a top-ranked, peer-reviewed journal 

Postdoctoral Fellow in Bioinformatics

This position is available immediately in the Scumpia Laboratory, which is focused on cutaneous systems biology research in the following thematic areas:
•        Combining RNA-seq, ChIP-Seq, ATAC-seq (including single cell approaches) datasets with transgenic mice and murine models of human disease to obtain mechanistic insights into cells and molecular pathways into skin disease. 
•        Understand the mechanisms of skin fibrosis, regeneration, or inflammation using integrated genomic technologies and cells from transgenic/KO mice.

The ideal candidates must have experience with:
•        RNA expression profiles, molecular pathway analysis (GO, GSEA, etc.)
•        Cell to cell interactions
•        Tools for handling large data sets

Interested individuals should have:
•        Experience with analysis of highly parallel sequencing data: R, A plus, or other coding language but may be acquired via training by our current postdoctoral fellow.
•        Fluency in English and strong written and oral communication skills: Prerequisites
•        Permanent U.S. residency or citizenship: Not required
•        At least one first-authored publication in a peer-reviewed journal
