Scope of Service

Two healthcare workers in scrubs and hairnets review a checklist while handling a blue sterile pack at a workstation with trays and a computer.

The UCLA Clinical Epidemiology & Infection Prevention (CEIP) department serves patients, staff and visitors in the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center (RRUCLAMC), Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital (RNPH), UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital (UCLAMCH), Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center (SMUCLAMC) and ambulatory clinics.

CEIP's primary responsibility is to prevent and control healthcare associated infections (HAIs) and prevent exposures to communicable diseases. We utilize a risk-based approach combined with regulatory requirements to guide efforts and gather surveillance data. We review surveillance data to identify potential HAIs using standardized HAI definitions established by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Quality improvement activities, policies and interventions are implemented in a scientific, evidenced-based manner with the goal of decreasing the risk of HAIs for patients, staff, and visitors. We work collaboratively with a wide variety of healthcare staff including but not limited to: Unit-based Nurses, Physicians, Environmental Services, Physical Therapy, and Respiratory Therapy. Our goal is to promote a culture of safety by assisting direct care providers with translating evidence into practice.
