CSUN KIN 494 Internship Opportunity 

Fall 2024

Position Overview: 

UCLA Health Sound Body Sound Mind is the leading provider of youth health and wellness resources in Los Angeles. SBSM targets its efforts to provide equitable access to physical education and wellness programs at middle and high schools. Our three-part program ensures schools have the necessary training and tools for the physical education department to reach its highest potential. We enrich the school community by providing a state-of-the-art fitness center, fitness and nutrition curriculums, and professional development for teachers. 

Under the direction of the Assistant Director, School Programming and the Manager, Communications & Programming, the interns will assist with two main areas of our programming: supporting professional development trainings and enhancing our exercise curriculum.  


​​​​Interns will learn skills applicable to public health and kinesiology. They will develop facilitation and leadership skills by hosting professional development sessions and leading exercises from the Sound Body Sound Mind exercise curriculum. By applying kinesiology principles in educational settings, they will improve their ability to design and modify physical education programs to accommodate students of all abilities. Additionally, they will build expertise in curriculum development, program evaluation, and feedback analysis. Through direct interaction with teachers, interns will strengthen their communication and collaboration skills.​​ ​​  

Interns will learn application of kinesiology background application to real-world experiences. Interns will apply their kinesiology background to real-world experiences by working directly with physical education teachers in six school districts across Los Angeles. They will understand how educational programs operate and the impact of these programs on student health and wellness. Interns will also gain valuable knowledge about the unique characteristics of each district and how they serve different demographics.​​​  

​​Interns will understand professional working environments within the context of educational and health promotion. They will collaborate with various professionals, adapt to different situations, and develop a positive attitude towards promoting health and wellness among youth.​​ 

Duties: 

  • Assist with modifying and improving the SBSM exercise curriculum 
  • Lead exercise demonstration during professional development trainings 
  • Collect and analyze feedback from teachers and students 
  • Other duties as assigned 

 

Schedule and Units 

Schedule flexible within working hours of Monday-Friday 8am-4:30pm. Some Saturday mornings will be required. 

2 units = 80 hours over the semester (minimum of 5.5 hours per week) 

3 units = 120 hours over the semester (minimum of 8 hours per week with additional duties as assigned) 

 

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum 2.5 GPA 
  • Successful completion of BIO 211, KIN 201, KIN 300 
  • Reliable transportation 
  • Personal computer for remote work 
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently  
  • TB, MMR, Varicella health clearance

Preferences: 

  • Preference will be given to students looking to complete 2 or more internship units 
  • Preference may be given to students in who are in the Physical Education option for those who have completed KIN 335 and 347  or those in the Applied Fitness, Active Lifestyle, Strength, and Conditioning option who have completed KIN 377 and 336 

However, all kinesiology option students interested in the field of physical education, community health programs, and/or non-profit work are encouraged to apply. 

Attendance & Punctuality: 

  • Interns are required to check in with internship site supervisor on assigned internship days 
  • 3 adherence violations will result in termination of internship with UCLA Health  
  • Upon termination, it is students’ responsibility to find another location to complete remainder of internship hours. 
  • Interns have one semester to complete internship hours. 
  • If interns do not complete their required hours, they will receive grade “NCr” no credit

UCLA Health Sound Body Sound Mind is looking to onboard one to two interns for the fall semester with the possibility of extending into the spring semester.
