Heart Transplant

Heart Transplant at UCLA

Our Heart Transplant Program offers opportunities few institutions can match. We provide exceptional outcomes, and care for some of the most difficult cases. We're also leaders in improving heart failure care and heart transplants, from techniques to technology.

We're one of the world's busiest and most successful programs for adult heart transplants, with more than 2,000 performed since 1984. For pediatrics, we've performed more than 300 and serve as a major referral center for the Western U.S.

We also excel in the closely related field of lung transplant, with the West Coast's largest thoracic transplant program.

Why Choose UCLA Heart Transplant?

At UCLA, we offer our patients an exceptional combination of experience, skill and personalized care:

  • Leading transplantation expertise: We are a world leader in heart transplantation, with a reputation that spans the country and the globe. Our physicians have decades of experience.
  • Impressive outcomes: Our outcomes consistently rank very high. Only 5 percent of our adult patients experience rejection of a donor heart, for example, compared to 25 percent of recipients nationwide.
  • Latest treatments: We offer both innovative and time-tested treatments for heart failure, including heart transplant, ventricular assist devices (VADs), artificial heart, and clinical research and trials.
  • Personalized medicine: We always keep our patients and their wishes at the center of medical decision-making, in a caring environment. Read more about our approach to care.
  • Collaborative pediatric and adult care: We are among the few programs that transplant both pediatric and adult patients, with a specialized process to help patients through the transition to adult care.
