Why I chose UCLA: UCLA just felt like home. The physicians and staff here were so welcoming, and they all shared a philosophy of providing excellent multimodal pain management.  

Dr. Joshua Barnhill served in the US Navy for a decade and also toured as a Flight Surgeon. He was appointed as the Anesthesiology department head for the USNS Comfort during the 2018 Enduring Promise mission to Peru, Ecuador, Columbia, and Honduras. Outside of work, Dr. Barnhill loves to spend time with his wife and two children, Dominic and Aria. He and his family enjoy going to the park, riding bikes, swimming, visiting the museum, and hanging out at the beach. Dr. Barnhill’s personal hobbies include running, hiking, kayaking, reading, and yoga.

Why I chose UCLA: Fellowship with a strong reputation, excellent faculty that are leaders in the field of Pain Medicine and wide exposure to interventional procedures and operative cases. 

Dr. Syed Jaffery is an avid North Carolina basketball fan and loves rooting for the Tar Heels. Some of Dr. Jaffery’s interests include cooking, exploring new restaurants, trying out new cuisines with his friends, and hosting dinner parties. Outside of food, he enjoys riding his Peloton, weight training, taking day trips, and working on DIY projects.

Why I chose UCLA: UCLA is home to me. It’s where I started my education in sciences and it’s near family and friends. It is also a world-class institution that prioritizes high quality care for its patients. Plus, it’s in beautiful, sunny Los Angeles!

Dr. Jerry Markar and his wife are proud parents of their two sons, Christopher and William. They love to spend time outdoors traveling, hiking, and camping. Some of Dr. Markar’s favorite days include taking his boys to soccer practice and watching them learn how to play. When he has time to himself, Dr. Markar enjoys catching a basketball game on TV.

Why I chose UCLA: I choose UCLA because I loved it during my sub-I and my husband completed his anesthesia residency at UCLA so I knew it wasn’t too good to be true.

Dr. Sara Navab enjoys singing and listening to music. She is a season ticket holder with the LA Opera and LA Philharmonic. Dr. Navab is also a member of the Academy of Magical Arts and can be spotted at the Magic Castle when she is not working or staying at home with her three cats.

Why I chose UCLA: UCLA provides me with a highly interventional yet comprehensive training environment. I knew that learning from leaders in the field and treating complex patients daily would best equip me to excel in any practice setting. 

Dr. Danny Neuman enjoys spending time with his wife, Lauren, and engaging in new experiences filled with culture, food, and people. They have a 75-pound golden doodle named Nelson who “pretty much runs the show.” Dr. Neuman’s other hobbies and interests include traveling, exercise, golfing, and design.

Why I chose UCLA: I received great training in residency, so when it came time to choose a program for fellowship in Pain Medicine, UCLA was an obvious choice for me. UCLA's Comprehensive Pain center is multidisciplinary and draws patients from all over the state and even country. The fellowship program has a focus on interventional pain strategies which I believe will prepare me for a future in interventional pain management.

Dr. Hayley Osen was very excited to match at UCLA for residency and is thrilled to continue at UCLA for her Pain Medicine fellowship training. She likes to travel, read, stay active with tennis and Pilates, and explore the LA food and cuisine. Dr. Osen’s professional interests include multidisciplinary pain management, acute and chronic post-surgical pain, neuromodulation techniques, and chronic pelvic pain.
