Being a Mobile Eye Clinic volunteer is a great opportunity for those interested in optometry, ophthalmology, public health, or any area within the health/nonprofit fields. We are flexible and try to tailor our program to meet the interests and expertise of our volunteers. Volunteers help us with a multitude of tasks that contribute to our mission and programs such as:
- Data entry
- Office work (i.e. filing, organizing glasses, taking inventory, compliance calls)
- Assisting technicians at health fairs/pop-up clinics
- Conducting research on various topics (i.e. Medicare, non-profit organizations)
UMEC also offers internship opportunities. To be considered for an internship, a greater time commitment is required: 80-100 hours during a 10-week quarter. Students are required to obtain coursework credit through their major’s department or school (UCLA 195 or 195CE courses, or similar). Interns complete similar duties to volunteers, as well as an additional project for the term.
How to become a volunteer/intern:
1) Email [email protected], or call the office at (310)-825-2195, to schedule an interview.
2) Once you complete the interview process and are approved, you will be officially invited by the inviting supervisor (UCLA Health Sciences Staff/Faculty) and receive an Opportunity Link via email to sign up for the Volunteer Assignment.
3) Upon successful receival of your Opportunity Link, complete all On-Boarding steps via Samaritan (the Volunteer Dashboard). On the dashboard, you must complete the requirements listed on Clinical UCLA Health Sciences Volunteer Requirements. Paperwork is also listed below for your reference, but these will be signed and completed through Samaritan.

4) Complete all the certifications below, which will also be a part of your On-Boarding assignments on Samaritan (the Volunteer Dashboard). They are listed below for your reference, but these must be completed through Samaritan.
- HIPAA Privacy and Information Security Training
- CICARE Annual On-Line Training
- Safe Patient Handling Training
- Volunteer Services Training
- Radiation Safety: Radiation Hazard Awareness Training
- COVID-19 Return to Volunteer Service Training
- Encryption Policy: Use of Mobile Devices and Removable Media Policy Attestation
- CUHS Orientation Training
- Volunteers Cyber Security Training
5) Complete the immunization requirements for UCLA Health. Upload necessary documentation onto Samaritan (the Volunteer Dashboard).
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella)
- Varicella (Chickenpox)
- TB TESTING (Tuberculosis, once a year):
- UCLA Ashe offers free TB testing with UCSHIP. Unfortunately, UMEC does not cover the cost of the test if you do not have UCSHIP. If you have any issues with this, please reach out to Clinical UCLA Health Sciences Volunteer Office at [email protected]
- If you would like to decline a TB test, you will not be able to volunteer in person.
- Influenza Vaccine (flu):
- UCLA has a flu shot fair for all UCLA students. It’s free for students with UCSHIP, and $15 for students without UCSHIP.
- TDAP (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis Vaccine)
- Hepatitis B Vaccine
- COVID-19 Vaccines:
- includes a third booster shot as of January 31, 2022.
Through the Ashe portal, UCLA Students MUST request an appointment for “UCLA Health - Volunteer/SRP Health Clearance Requirement”

ALL OTHER INDIVIDUALS:
Non-UCLA students must provide the Non-UCLA Student Volunteer Health Clearance Letter from your primary care physician.
*note: All immunization clearances must be completed prior to Onboarding Appointment, or you will be asked to reschedule.
6) Only after you have completed the above Onboarding assignments and obtained health clearance and have been verified by our coordinators, book an Onboarding Appointment.
7) Complete the Final Session Orientation to finalize the clearance process after your Onboarding Appointment.
8) Once your background check has cleared and you pass the final session orientation, you will be able to pick up your ID badge and begin!
*Due to COVID-19, only non-clinical locations have been approved for onsite volunteers and interns. Volunteers and interns will not be able to work in-person for clinical locations.*
