The Department of Pediatrics and the UCLA Children's Discovery and Innovation Institute (CDI Institute) at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine encourage multidisciplinary child health research and training across the spectrum of basic, translational, clinical and health services research.

One of the major goals of the CDI Institute is to train pediatric subspecialty physician-scientists who will focus on improving the fundamental understanding of pediatric diseases and devising innovative approaches for treatment. Through the generous support of Harry Winston, Inc., the Harry Winston Fellowship Awards were established in 2014 to provide key support for competitively selected UCLA pediatric scholars - the Harry Winston Fellows - in their second and third years of training.  This funding is for one year.  Fellows can submit a competitive renewal for a second year of funding.

In 2016, in addition to three Harry Winston Fellowships awarded, one of the other applicant finalists was awarded a Friedman Endowed Fellowship. The latter award is in honor of the late Dr. William F. Friedman, former executive chairman of the department of pediatrics and senior associate dean for academic affairs at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Dr. Friedman was widely regarded as a gifted physician and researcher who enjoyed a prolific career as a pediatric cardiologist and academic leader that spanned more than 40 years, including 26 years at UCLA.
