Our Commitment to Diversity

We are committed to the recruitment of fellows who self-identify as underrepresented in medicine to the UCLA Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship Program. We aim to create a diverse and culturally sensitive workforce that reflects and responds to the needs of our increasingly diverse population in Los Angeles. We recognize that diversity and inclusion among our fellows and faculty promotes the delivery of high-quality, culturally aware care to the diverse patient population that we serve.

Fellows have the opportunity to join the UCLA Pediatric Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee which creates a forum to celebrate and value diversity. Some committee events include book club, diversity series noon conference lectures and community projects.

Dear Applicant,

At UCLA, we recognize that a sense of belonging is essential for growth, both personal and professional. When we are made to feel like we don’t belong, that pain can be visceral and traumatizing. For us, creating a sense of inclusivity for everyone is at the core of what we do.

As the PHM division’s liaisons to the UCLA Pediatric Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee (JEDI), we work to engage everyone in our division to tackle the issues related to our committee’s namesake. For such complex and entrenched issues, we must approach with humility, patience, and resilience.

We are working within UCLA Health’s greater efforts on health equity, diversity and inclusion. Our current efforts include a QI project to incorporate conversations about equity into our daily patient care, addressing systemic inequity issues at an institutional level, and educating ourselves through regular faculty development seminars and journal clubs on race-based topics. We actively incorporate the principles of JEDI into conferences and clinical rounds.  In past years we were fortunate enough to work at one of the emergency shelters for unaccompanied migrant children at our border, and we plan to broaden our engagement with our community through advocacy and outreach efforts.

We want to give you a sense of our approach here at UCLA on these challenging issues. We are doing our best and we can do better. If you have any questions, comments, or would like to join our efforts, please reach out to us at any time.

Sincerely,
