Services

Services are provided at no cost to families in the UCLA Head Start Program.

Home Visits

• Home visits are conducted by trained Early Childhood Educators that support parents in their role as first their child’s first teacher
• Families receive a weekly 1½ hour home visit
• Home visits cover child development, health, nutrition, school readiness activities
• Early Childhood Educators engage parents in goal setting for their child, their family and themselves
• Help parents improve their parenting skills and assist using the home as a learning environment
• Early Childhood Educators use an evidence based curriculum that support the acquisition of school readiness skills

Socializations

• Parents participate in a parent and me group (“Socialization”) twice a month bringing a group experience to children
• Socializations provide opportunities for the child to engage with other children. Activities are aimed at targeting social-emotional development skills
• Socializations allow parents an opportunity to create social connections with other parents

Developmental Screening

• All children receive a child development screening within 45 days of enrollment and at least twice a year thereafter
• Families are referred to local resources if their child needs further evaluation

Ongoing Developmental Assessment

• Children’s developmental skills are assessed at least 3 times year
• Assessments results are used to develop school readiness goals
• Early Childhood Educators work with families to plan activities that will stimulate development

Health Tracking and Monitoring

• A Health Services professional supports parents in understanding their child’s health, provides referrals as necessary, ensures that children are up-to-date in their well-child care and immunization schedule

Family Services

• Leadership opportunities
• Activities that encourage engagement in community events
• Goal setting with families
• Referrals to local community programs

Access to Professionals

All enrolled families have access to:

• Registered Dietician – nutrition information and counseling
• Mental Health Counselors- individual appointments and support groups available
