Dr. Victor D. NewcomerDr. Victor D. Newcomer (April 5, 1916 - March 15, 2002) was a Clinical Professor of Dermatology at UCLA for more than 40 years. He was renowned for being a superb teacher and role model for generations of dermatologists.  In 1988, his students established the Victor D. Newcomer, M.D., Award for Excellence in Teaching.  Among his other honors were the Golden Apple and Excellence in Teaching awards at UCLA; Thomas L. Stern Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center; J.N. Taub International Memorial Award (research in psoriasis); Clark W. Finnerud Award from the Dermatology Foundation; Everett C. Fox, M.D., Memorial Lectureship; and Masters in Dermatology from the American Academy of Dermatology.

During his long and distinguished career, Dr. Newcomer served as a member of prestigious boards, committees, foundations, associations, societies, academies, and task forces.  In addition, he published more than 152 articles and book chapters.  Passionate about medical photography, he used his collection of 40,000 clinical images to train residents and medical students.  Clearly, Dr. Newcomer was a dedicated health professional, educator, mentor, and advocate for dermatology patients, especially as expressed through his tireless activities in local and national organizations.

The Victor D. Newcomer, M.D. Endowed Lectureship is a fund established as a lasting tribute to Dr. Newcomer, and supports a distinguished yearly lecture series to enhance the Division's education and research mission. National and international leaders in dermatology are invited to UCLA to give presentations, and to interact with faculty, residents, fellows, and students in order to further dermatology research in areas formerly promoted by Dr. Newcomer.  In addition to a key note speaker, UCLA Dermatology faculty, residents and fellows give presentations about their current research.

For those interested in giving to a lasting tribute to Dr. Newcomer which underwrites a distinguished lecture series to benefit the Division’s mission in research and education, please visit this link to The Victor D. Newcomer, M.D. Endowed Lecture.
