Background

The UCLA Center for Prehospital Care (CPC), housed in the UCLA Department of Emergency Medicine, is a world leader and Center of Excellence in the fields of prehospital care and emergency medical services (EMS).  Established in 1988, CPC represents best practices in developing and delivering education to physicians, residents, medical students, nurses, paramedics, and emergency medical technicians, as well as in designing and ensuring the quality of the emergency medical systems in which they practice.

The Center plays a key role in creating the future of EMS – conducting and promoting original and innovative research, developing model curricula for prehospital care students and practitioners, mentoring and educating current and future care providers in the most advanced practices, helping to design EMS systems, and ensuring the quality of EMS in Southern California, the nation, and the world.  The Center serves aspiring and experienced EMS providers, agencies, local governments and healthcare professionals in a variety of settings and locations.

Curriculum and EMS Education Development Partnerships

The center for prehospital care prides itself in partnering with our colleagues throughout the world to improve EMS training outcomes.  The goal of these flexible short-term partnerships are meant to inspire and empower our colleagues.  The vision of the program is to create evidence-based state-of-the-art projects that can become self-sustaining in their home country.

Custom Programs

Upon request, UCLA Health is available to deliver tailored education programs and provide consulting services worldwide. Our program faculty have the ability to deliver and design nearly any custom course in prehospital emergency medicine and EMS including half day, full day or multiple day programs.  Additionally, program faculty are able to deliver a wide array of course by both the American Heart Association and the National Association of EMTs (NAEMT).

Online/Hybrid Programming

UCLA offers online and hybrid programming in nearly every program area.  UCLA program faculty delivers dynamic lectures in online classrooms using technology that only requires a steady Internet connection.  This offers students abroad the ability to learn in an online environment with experienced program faculty without incurring the cost of travel and to continue working.  Students participating in UCLA’s online/hybrid programs are every bit as successful in courses as their traditional classroom counterparts.

Simulation and High Fidelity Education

Often times the most challenging medical education to simulate are those situations that are low frequency, yet very complex such as active shooter events, targeted automobile ramming, school violence, and bioterrorism.   These challenging events are difficult to simulate in in the current training atmosphere.  UCLA however, uses multi-modal simulation (including simulated participants, high quality moulage, and high-fidelity manikins) in learning environments that increase fidelity and improve the translation from training to the first responders’ ability to treat actual patients.
