The neonatology faculty consists of fourteen MDs and two PhDs with expertise in basic, clinical, and translational research along with quality improvement research and implementation science.  Specific areas of expertise include:

  • Perinatal/neonatal metabolism & nutrition
  • Hypoxic/ischemic brain injury
  • Pathogenesis of neonatal infections, inflammation, and immunity including preterm labor
  • Developmental origins of adult disease
  • Retinopathy of prematurity
  • Placental diseases
  • Molecular mechanisms of lung development and injury
  • Neonatal clinical trials
  • Epigenetics/genomics
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Bronchopulmonary dysplasia

Federal funding from the National Institutes of Health supports many of these projects. Neonatology faculty are represented in Regional and National Organizations including: the Western Society for Pediatric Research, Society for Pediatric Research, American Pediatric Society, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
