Acanthosis nigricans is a harmless skin condition that causes the skin to become thicker and darker.
What Causes Acanthosis Nigricans?
Dermatology experts do not know the exact cause of acanthosis nigricans. The skin disorder is not harmful, but it can sometimes be associated with obesity, diabetes mellitus, some medications and other medical conditions.
Signs and Symptoms of Acanthosis Nigricans
Typically, the skin becomes thicker and darker, a greyish-brown color. It may appear soft or velvety. Commonly affected areas include around the neck and in the armpits.
Treatment for Acanthosis Nigricans
Acanthosis nigricans is harmless and usually shows no symptoms. Because there is no specific treatment for the condition, treatment is cosmetic. Some topical (skin-based) creams may help.
Because acanthosis nigricans may be associated with other medical conditions, diagnosing and treating any underlying causes is important and can sometimes lead to improvement.
