David Chen, MD

David Chen, MD

David Chen, MD, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and Professor of Clinical Surgery at the David Geffen School Medicine at UCLA, is the Director of the Lichtenstein Amid Hernia Institute. He was directly trained by Dr. Amid in modern Lichtenstein technique, complex hernia management and repair, and operative remediation of hernia pain. He is an international expert in open, laparoscopic, and robotic techniques for complex hernia repair, abdominal wall reconstruction, and foregut and hiatal hernia surgery, with an emphasis on post-operative chronic pain. He is recognized as one of the preeminent leaders in the field through his clinical experience, research, lectures, and publications on hernia repair and chronic pain after hernia surgery with over 250 lectures and live surgeries, 53 peer reviewed publications and 44 book chapters. He is the current president-elect of the Americas Hernia Society and serves on the editorial boards of several journals. Dr. Chen is focused on treatment, education and research for repair of hernias, advanced minimally invasive techniques for abdominal wall reconstruction and hernia repair, repair of diaphragmatic and hiatal hernias, and surgery for chronic pain, mesh complications, and nerve entrapment. More >


Ian MacQueen, MD

Ian MacQueen, MD

Ian MacQueen, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and faculty at the Lichtenstein Amid Hernia Institute. He holds Board Certification in General Surgery and has specialized expertise in inguinal hernia repair with and without mesh, complex abdominal wall reconstruction, and a range of minimally invasive hernia repair techniques via both advanced laparoscopy and robotic-assisted surgery. His clinical and research interests encompass all hernia types, including less common hernias such as hiatal, diaphragmatic, parastomal, flank, and lumbar hernias. He has extensive experience in complex surgical management of chronic post-operative pain after hernia repair, including treatment of nerve injuries and mesh complications. He teaches these subjects on a daily basis, he has lectured on them across the United States, and he participates in efforts to study and teach these techniques internationally. His publications include multiple book chapters and peer-reviewed articles on hernia repair, foregut disease, neuroanatomy of the abdominal wall and groin, and surgical management of chronic pain. More >


Parviz Amid, MD

Parviz Amid, MD

Parviz Amid, MD, former Professor of Clinical Surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, was the co-founder of the Lichtenstein Hernia Institute and now serves as Emeritus Professor. He is an instrumental figure in Herniology and helped to define the modern era of hernia surgery by establishing many of the principles of modern hernia repair and the treatment of chronic pain after hernia surgery. He was the co-founder and past president of the Americas Hernia Society. He has trained expert hernia surgeons from all over the world and has lectured across the U.S. and throughout Europe, Canada, Asia, South America and Australia. He continues to be active in research and teaching, and the mission, principles and techniques and that he developed still serve as the foundation of the Lichtenstein Amid Hernia Institute today.
