A new survey ranks several training programs at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLAamong the best in the western United States. The report, conducted in partnership with U.S. News and World Report, rated UCLA in the top 10 in 15 specialties, including the No. 1 slots in psychiatry and urology.
Commissioned by Doximity, a social network for physicians, the data is intended to help fourth-year medical students decide where to launch their careers. The survey evaluated 3,691 residency training programs across 20 specialties based on more than 50,000 peer nominations from board-certified U.S. physicians nationwide.
Among all residency programs in the western U.S., UCLA programs placed in the top 10 for the following specialties:
- Urology (No. 1)
- Psychiatry (No. 1)
- Neurology (No. 2)
- Obstetrics and gynecology (No. 3)
- Head and neck surgery (No. 3)
- Diagnostic radiology (No. 3)
- Surgery (No. 3)
- Internal medicine (No. 4 - tie) Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center
- Internal medicine (No. 4 - tie) Harbor–UCLA Medical Center
- Neurosurgery (No. 4)
- Anesthesiology (No. 5)
- Pediatrics (No. 6)
- Dermatology (No. 8)
- Family medicine (No. 8)
- Orthopaedic surgery (No. 8)
“Doximity featured 75 percent of UCLA’s residency programs in its top 10 in the West,” said Dr. Clarence Braddock, vice dean for education at the Geffen School. “This recognition reflects our faculty’s level of talent and dedication, and the quality and breadth of experience our residents acquire during their training in our health system.”
Doximity counts more than half of all U.S. physicians among its membership; among other benefits, the site enables new medical school graduates to connect with experienced doctors.
Founded in 1951, the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA employs more than 2,500 full-time faculty members, including recipients of the Nobel Prize, the Pulitzer Prize and the National Medal of Science. Nearly 10,155 candidates apply each year for one of 175 spaces in the first-year class. Enrollment totals more than 860 students and almost 400 Ph.D. candidates. More than 1,400 residents and fellows pursue advanced training at UCLA and its affiliated hospitals, which include Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the best hospital in the western United States for 25 consecutive years and No. 5 among the nation’s hospitals.
