Having surgery or an invasive procedure that requires anesthesia is a significant event in anyone's life. Our primary concerns are your care, safety, and comfort before, during, and after your procedure.

With nearly 200 clinical and research faculty members, a diverse educational program that includes over 120 residents and fellows, and a remarkable team of nurse anesthetists, clinical support staff, and administrative staff, ours is a growing and vibrant department that is always looking for the best ways to help our patients, our community, and our world.

Research

Our department has been a consistent leader in basic science, clinical, and translational research, and now is breaking new ground in precision health research, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.

Types of Anesthesia

There are four main categories of anesthesia used during surgery and other procedures: general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, sedation (sometimes call "monitored anesthesia care"), and local anesthesia. Sometimes patients may choose which type of anesthesia will be used.
