Dr. Mark Warner discussed ways to make anesthesiology even safer at Grand Rounds on Sept. 25. "Stay off your cell phones!" he advised. The APSF President, seen here with Dr. Emily Methangkool, outlined safety goals for the year, including using early warning systems such as end-tidal CO2 for all perioperative patients, better monitoring for treatable problems (depressed ventilation, sepsis), and early recognition and faster response for the decompensating patient.
Congratulations to faculty member Susana Vacas, MD, PhD, right, on her $1 million, five-year K23 Development Award from the NIH! Her research involves postoperative neurocognitive disorders (PCND), a significant public health problem that can lead to a cascade of complications for patients. With her mentor, Rajesh Kumar, PhD, Dr. Vacas will study high-risk patients with obstructive sleep apnea to learn more about the mechanisms of brain injury and neuroinflammation after surgery.
