Dr. Carol Mangione, Barbara A. Levey M.D., and Gerald S. Levey, M.D., Endowed chair in medicine and chief of the UCLA Division of General Internal Medicine and Health Services Research, has been named chair of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF).
“Appointment as Chair of the USPSTF is an important opportunity to work with my task force colleagues to continue to develop and disseminate evidence based preventive services recommendations that will improve the health of all Americans, and to also implement actions to transform the US Preventive Services Task Force methods to mitigate systemic racism in the development and implementation of clinical preventive services,” said Mangione, who is also executive vice chair for Health Equity and Health Services Research in the UCLA Department of Medicine.
The term is for one year.
The USPSTF is an independent, volunteer panel of national experts in prevention and evidence-based medicine. Members come from many health-related fields, including internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, behavioral health, obstetrics and gynecology, and nursing.
Mangione previously served as vice chair from 2020 to 2022 and as a member from 2016 through 2019. She is also a distinguished professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, distinguished professor of public health at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, and director of the UCLA Resource Centers for Minority Aging Research. Mangione is also a practicing primary care clinician in the UCLA Faculty Practice Group. She is director of the UCLA Clinical and Translational Science Institute Workforce Development Program and is a member of the National Academy of Medicine.
