The prestigious fellowship honors ARVO members for their accomplishments, leadership and contributions to the association, which follows a point system for awarding a gold or silver level of fellowship.
Members earn points for a variety of activities, including research abstract submission, committee service, editorial board, elected office, journal review, program organization, or Foundation board and chapter service.
UCLA's 2009 ARVO Gold Fellows include Dean Bok, Ph.D., Dolly Green Professor of Ophthalmology; Joseph Caprioli, M.D., David May II Professor of Ophthalmology; Joseph Demer, M.D., Ph.D., Leonard Apt Professor of Pediatric Ophthalmology; and Debora Farber, Ph.D., D.Phhc, Karl Kirchgessner Professor of Ophthalmology.

Recognized as role models and mentors for others pursuing careers in ophthalmology, ARVO fellows advance vision research and the prevention and cure of visual disorders worldwide. This includes advancing basic and clinical knowledge and serving as the leading international forum for vision research and the primary advocate for vision science worldwide.
The Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA was founded in 1966 by ophthalmologist, businessman and philanthropist Dr. Jules Stein and his wife Doris with the goal of creating a comprehensive center dedicated to the preservation of vision and the prevention of blindness. The institute's highly respected faculty and state-of-the-art facilities have earned an international reputation for its programs for the care of patients with eye disorders, research in the vision sciences, education in the field of ophthalmology and outreach to the community.
