UCLA Health antimicrobial stewardship program honored

Daniel Z. Uslan, MD, Director, UCLA Health Antimicrobial Stewardship Program

The Infectious Disease Society of America recently awarded an Antimicrobial Centers of Excellence designation to UCLA Health in recognition of its program designed to enhance the quality of patient care and reduce resistance to antibiotic medications.

“Our program works to ensure the optimal selection, dose, and duration of antibiotics that lead to the best possible treatment of infections while reducing the risk of resistance to antibiotics,” said Dr. Daniel Uslan, clinical chief of infectious diseases and director of the UCLA Health Antimicrobial Stewardship Program.

Over-prescription of antibiotics can lead to increased resistance to medications. According to the infectious disease society, more than 700,000 people worldwide die annually due to infections resistant to antibiotics.

The IDSA recognition program emphasizes an institution’s ability to implement stewardship protocols using electronic health records system and to provide ongoing education to its medical staff. The program builds on criteria established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
